This photoset is from the Sourland Mountain Preserve.  We were searching for (and found!) Aplectrum hyemale, which is the twenty-fifth orchid that I've seen in New Jersey.  This species is unusual in that it has an alternate life cycle, growing its leaf during the cold months and withering during the warm ones.  It's also a very rare plant in the state, ranked S1 (1-5 occurrences).
