I started an online wish list many years ago to help people find ideas for gifts that I'd actually appreciate. If you do decide to get something for me, please take a look at my essay on buying things used before you head out to the store. You might also want to check with my wonderful girlfriend to make sure someone else isn't planning the same thing. Here are some gift ideas, ranging from more expensive to less expensive:
- The Zojirushi NHS-06 rice cooker
- Liquor. Some ideas are single malt Scotch whisky (some suggestions would be Ardbeg, Talisker, Highland Park, Glen Scotia, Saint Magdalene, Dalmore, Bladnoch, Aberlour (A'Bunadh in particular), Lagavulin, Oban, Macallan, or Laphroaig) or eau-de-vie (fruit brandy, not artificially fruit-flavored brandy) is nice.
- Effects pedals for my guitar: Mesa Boogie V-Twin, etc.
- Orchids. I'll take any orchids I can get, although I'm not to keen on orchids that have very busy-looking flowers. I've been looking for the species plants (in no particular order) Dendrobium cuthbertsonii, Dendrobium igneum, Dendrobium lancifolium, Dendrobium draconis, Dendrobium suzukii, Cattleya guatemalensis, and Oncidium ampliatum var. majus. I'm also looking to increase my collection of Dendrobium hybrids and Cattleya-type hybrids. To get an idea of what I already have, you can check out my orchids page here Orchids seedlings can be had for $7 or less but require several years before they flower. A reasonable price for a blooming orchid is about $20, unless it happens to be particularly large or rare.
- Other houseplants, provided they're not cacti. Gesneriads are a pretty good idea, too, but please no African violets unless they're especially special. Here are some ideas: Bougainvillea Raspberry Ice, Clerodendrum thomsoniae (Glory Bower), Epsicia cupreata (Flame violet), Felicia amelloides (Blue Daisy), and Streptocarpus hybrids. None of these plants should be too expensive
- A heavy-gauge speaker cable with 1/4" plugs to go between my guitar amp and speaker cabinet, about 3' long would be plenty.
- Guitar strings: Ernie Ball Super Slinkies (the ones in the hot pink package)
- Books: I'll read just about anything, and used books aren't expensive. Some topics ideas are plants, orchids, cooking, and electronics.
